5.0 out of 5 stars Songs About Birds 7 Jan 2013

Here's a thing - not just another recording that puts bird song to cd, but a recording that actually writes about birds in song. `Songs About Birds' seems too prosaic a title, when you consider the songs themselves and the marvellous manner in which they evoke the behaviour, voices and habitats of 12 bird species, from the jaunty strum of the curlew (track 1) to the yearning vocals of the albatross (track 12). Musically, this album takes in elements of pop, folk and rock, although each track combines these elements in different ways so as to give each bird its own signature and musical impression. Listen carefully to the lyrics and you'll find an array of information about each bird, but filtered through the eyes of a human still alive to the wonder and joy of nature, and with all the associations and memories that birds can inspire in us. So, short of going out and doing your own spot of birding, this must be the next best thing - hearing these birds expressed in such a lyrical and beautiful way.

You'd have to be mad about birds to write 12 songs about them: for some of us the only birds we're interested in are the ones on our plates. That Mr Haar must be something of an enthusiast therefore is reflected in the fact that not only has he written 12 songs about birds; he's actually written them rather well. Indeed, listening to the songs it becomes obvious that Mr Haar is passionate about our feathered friends. The songs themselves are poetry, and filled with observations that only someone who cares about birds could make, whilst the music is catchy and at times made me think of the Kinks or the Beatles. There is humour - a barn owl painted as a serial killer on trial, beauty - a romantic musing on the solitude of a black-throated diver and even politics - in a plea being made for the plight of the majestic but endangered albatross. Finally, there is a wonderful touch also in that before each song there is a recording of the song of the bird itself which, for an ignoramous like me, was quite magical. All in all, for anyone who loves birds, this album is a treat.

                                       SONGS  ABOUT  BIRDS

Our monthly RSPB programme described the evening as being musical with a bird theme.   We were intrigued and unsure what to expect, as were many of the other members.   We decided to go and were pleasantly surprised.

RONNIE  HAAR   played guitar and sang, accompanied by an equally talented friend of his  -  great tunes and harmonies.   His interest and knowledge of birds was evident.   He provided information and pictures of the birds together with the lyrics to his songs on a big screen and also distributed a fun quiz sheet to fill in during the performance, the prize being one of his CDs.

We really enjoyed the evening and were glad we went.
